The Somewhere Motel — Adding Sense of Place to a Blank Slate :

[ New York City Motel ]

This project challenged me to design a lobby interior that reflects a chosen regional identity while integrating a detailed feature wall and ceiling system. Set within a simplified plan, the design explores how materiality, spatial hierarchy, and detailing can evoke a sense of place. In addition to meeting core functional needs like reception, circulation, and support space, the focus was on crafting a distinctive visual moment through architectural surfaces.

  • “ Imagine that this generic lobby design is a part of a project you are working on where the client has asked you to reflect the city/region, culture or landscape of the surrounding area. For the purposes of this assignment you may choose the location….

The program for the lobby is simple. You should provide a generous front desk, an accessible bathroom, a “behind the scenes” work counter/small luggage storage, and a passage door into the breakfast/catering kitchen shown in the plan. Merchandising space and/or exhibits are encouraged, lobby seating is fine if you have space, but not essential. ”

  • The intent of this exercise is for students to demonstrate the ability to detail a “feature wall” with an integrated ceiling design.
